4 steps to bridging the remote gap

In 2024, remote working remains one of the most coveted work benefits. A huge 78% of employees said working from home offered improved work-life balance and 53% said it offered fewer distractions (ONS). It is projected that 70% of the global workforce will work remotely at least five days a month from 2025. With remote working not going anywhere quickly, we look at how to bridge the remote gap so your team feels part of the pack.

1. Tackling productivity anxiety

A Workhuman study of over 1000 remote employees in the UK found that two thirds suffer from productivity anxiety, including feelings of inadequacy or pressure to perform constantly. Fully office based workers, in comparison, report the least amount of productivity anxiety. Counter productivity anxiety by ensuring goal setting within remote teams is realistic, with adequate support and a culture that champions work-life balance.

2. Banishing boreout

We’ve all heard of burnout but what about boreout? A huge 69% of remote workers have reported feeling bored at work (according to Workhuman). There can be many reasons for boreout, from a lack of social interaction, repetitive tasks to a person-environment mismatch. Creating opportunities for your team to stay connected, switching up regular meeting times and giving staff the chance to work from a different location can all help to banish boreout.

3. Rewarding remotely

Workhuman also found that office workers feel higher levels of motivation than office workers but why? It could be down to recognition. With almost a quarter of UK employees now working fully from home (ONS May-June 2024) and 26% working hybrid, it’s vital that your reward and recognition strategy works as well for your hybrid or remote staff as for your office team. Digital or physical Town & City Gift Cards can slot right into your remote reward strategy.

4. Powering productivity

The debate about remote working and productivity rages on. One Stanford University study found a 10% reduction in productivity in remote workers, citing everything from self-motivation to communication challenges and lack of mentoring. Yet another survey found that 63% of women and 55% of men say they are productive working from home. The reality is that productivity can be a challenge for all staff – project management software and virtual collaboration tools can all help to boost productivity.
