Supporting local – do employees really care?

More and more organisations – big and small – are making the move to local rewards. But the big question is, do employees really care about supporting local? Back in August this year, we spoke to real employees to find out…

1. Greater awareness of support for local

Post pandemic and understanding of why we need to shop local is higher than ever. In fact, 98% are keen to support local for Christmas 2023. As one employee puts it: “It is very important to support local businesses now. Lots of businesses have closed, and whenever I give a gift, I prefer to spend locally.”

2. It makes your firm more attractive

It seems obvious, but 91% of employees are more likely to want to work for an organisation that offers a good rewards package and with support for local so high, choosing local can have a big impact on the attractiveness of your firm to employees. As explained by one employee: “It reinforces their commitment to the local area. Something which I know many might look at when applying for positions within certain companies.”

3. Keeping businesses open

87% of employees say they shop local to keep businesses open. “My attitude towards supporting local businesses has definitely changed over time,” said one employee. “I shop local to keep the businesses I like open, because it impacts my life negatively if they close.

4. Positive vibes

Not only does supporting local help places, it spreads positive vibes too. “I think that organisations should support local by using their local gift card because it has a positive knock on effect,” said one employee. “I think it makes you feel more positive about the organisation too, if you hear that they are supporting the city.”

5. Taking an active role in community success

There’s no denying that Town & City Gift Cards make a tangible impact locally, and that is appreciated by employees. One employee explained: “If an organisation is a local business, then they do have a role to play in the success of the town or city. Everyone needs to help each other because it contributes to the circular economy.”

6. Helping family and friends

The reality is that many local businesses will be owned by, or staffed by, the friends and family of your employees, so when you support local, you help them too. One employee said: “A lot of organisations are becoming more vocal about their support for local now because they realise the positive impact it has on their employees, many of whom will live locally or have friends and family who do.”

7. An easier life

For many employees, shopping local is easier on so many levels. “I don’t like having to rely on online shopping for gifts as it might not arrive on time, and then people think you’ve forgotten their birthday or special event,” said a research participant. “I also like to see gifts in person myself.”

8. A great place to live

Last but not least, employees favour local shopping because it makes our towns and cities exciting, interesting places to live, work and visit. One employee said: “Supporting local businesses is very important to me because I don’t want these businesses to go anywhere. I enjoy going out and checking out new restaurants near where I live, especially the non-chains.”
