Driving staff retention with Town & City Gift Cards

With long service awards in place for 10, 15 and 20 years of service administered through expenses and M&S gift cards, Helix decided to refresh their program in 2023 using Town & City Gift Cards. Mo Rose, Senior HR Advisor told us how it went.

About Helix

Helix is an international offshore energy services company with a head office in Houston and a base in Aberdeen, focusing on well intervention, robotics and decommissioning projects. The company owns 3 vessels with over 600 employees both offshore and onshore, across its various operations.

What rewards/incentives does Helix offer?

“One of the main rewards/incentives we offer for staff is long service awards for 10, 15 and 20 years of service. Our aim is to show appreciation to employees for their efforts and encourage retention. In the past, the way we’ve administered the scheme is enabling employees to claim back the cost of going out for a meal with their family through expenses, to a pre-agreed amount. We’ve also used M&S gift cards.”

What are your key objectives for your employee rewards/incentives?

“The difficulty of offering the incentive through expenses was that employees had to foot the bill initially, and go to the effort of claiming it back. The cost of living crisis is a consideration, and we didn’t want staff to have to make that initial outlay. Our objective when introducing a new method of rewarding our staff was to make it easy for them.”

Why did you choose Town & City Gift Cards?

“One of our team suggested the Aberdeen Gift Card (which is part of the Town & City Gift Cards initiative) as an alternative for our rewards/incentives. We liked the idea of using the Aberdeen Gift Card because it can not only be used on food and eating out, but on products, experiences and services, and with both big brands and independents. It gives our employees more choice on how to spend their reward. Employers often choose Amazon gift vouchers because they have to cater for a variety of needs. The Aberdeen Gift Card still has lots of choice and it’s good for local businesses too.”

What was your experience of using Town & City Gift Cards?

“It was super easy to order the Aberdeen Gift Card. I placed an order online, received an invoice and the cards were posted out. I like the security of knowing that the cards are only activated once we confirm we have received them, and if I’ve had any questions, the team at Town & City Gift Cards has been really helpful. 

“We’ve opted for the physical version of the Aberdeen Gift Card, which is presented to the employee for their long service award accompanied by a letter from the company thanking them for their efforts. I think the fact that employees actually have the physical reward there in their hands encourages them to actually use it.”

What feedback have you received?

“Feedback to the Aberdeen Gift Card from our staff has been really positive. Employees are using the gift card to treat themselves to treat their family, and it might be spent in a few different businesses which spreads the benefit out across the city. We’ll be continuing with the Aberdeen Gift Card for our long service awards.”
